Rolling Stock used on the line



All services on the Branch uses Diesel 'Sprinter' trains for all services, which are either one or two carriages in length. All trains have sliding doors, one toilet per unit and space for push chairs, wheelchairs and bikes, the units carry a portable ramp which the guard will setup if anyone needs assistance entering or exiting the train.


Weekday Services: Class 156 Super Sprinters


156422 at BrundallThe Class 156 units operate in the Sudbury line during weekdays in order to provide a sufficient number of seats for the peak time loadings, they have recently replaced the 2-Car Class 150 units which have worked on the line since 2001
The 156s were built in 1989 by Metro-Cammell and consist of two 23 metre vehicles each vehicle is powered by a Diesel Powered 285HP Cummins NT-855-R5 engine with a top speed of 75mph.
Each unit is able to seat around 148 people, with the seating laid out in the 2+2 fashion, seating bays also feature tables with the airline style seating featuring small flip up tables.
Each unit also has an area for bikes, a large toilet as well as spaces for wheelchairs.

Weekend Services: Class 153 Single Carriage Sprinters


153309Weekend services on the line are provided by single carriage Class 153 units, these units have the same engines as the 156s, can seat 66 people and have space for a wheelchair and four bikes.
The Class 153s were originally built as 2-car Class 155 units by Leyland in 1987, but were split into single car units in 1991 to provide more trains on Regional services.

The Class 153s operated on the Sudbury Line 7 days a week until 2001, as since 1999 they had become inadequate for peak time loadings with buses providing supplementary services whilst First Great Eastern were searching for a Class 150 to use. On May 21st 2001, 150255 was the 1st 150 to operate to Sudbury.

One Railway currently have 5x153 units, three of which were refurbished by Anglia Railways, all 5 units are named after local people, including Benjamin Britten and Gerrard Finnes.
