Weekend Services: Class 153 Single Carriage Sprinters
Weekend services on the line are provided by single carriage Class 153 units, these units have the same engines as the 156s, can seat 66 people and have space for a wheelchair and four bikes.
The Class 153s were originally built as 2-car Class 155 units by Leyland in 1987, but were split into single car units in 1991 to provide more trains on Regional services.
The Class 153s operated on the Sudbury Line 7 days a week until 2001, as since 1999 they had become inadequate for peak time loadings with buses providing supplementary services whilst First Great Eastern were searching for a Class 150 to use. On May 21st 2001, 150255 was the 1st 150 to operate to Sudbury.
One Railway currently have 5x153 units, three of which were refurbished by Anglia Railways, all 5 units are named after local people, including Benjamin Britten and Gerrard Finnes.
